Park Dump Tanka

Starlight on the Gutter of  Blossoms, I

cherry blossom rain ...
under a grey-veined sky
the park dump
with needles scattered
in mangy green

FYI: My new writing project, Starlight on the Gutter of Blossoms, applies the violent lens of the urban onihishigitei style to the modern landscape. Inspired by Christine Judd’s "neon lights" tanka, the title hijacks Oscar Wilde’s romanticism—"We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars"—and forces that celestial gaze down into the city’s filth to "slay" traditional beauty.

summer stars

slick after slick
of oily black choking
the throat of a storm drain

Added: Starlight on the Gutter of  Blossoms, III

Street-Preach Chants Haiku

street-preach chants ...
clouds of breath weaving through
the Friday night crowd

FYI: The following could be read as its prequel:

a street preacher talks
over a line of pro-choicers --
his arguments
frothy as soapsuds
get big ... and bigger

Added:

twilight fog drifting ...
my shadow and I follow
no one

FYI: My haiku below could be read as its prequel:

Read My Lips

"Canada is not for sale. You can kiss me where the sun doesn’t shine, and you can put a big 'C' in front of it," a grey-haired auto worker shouts out his defiant challenge to the people strolling along the opposite bank of the river, at least one mile away.

Alone at the edge of East Riverview Park, a patch of green overlooking the Detroit River, he continues his shouting for minutes until he hears the distant laughter drifting toward him

Tower Cranes Tanka

written on Labor Day

a gray-haired worker
takes another sip of coffee
from his thermos ...
tower crane after tower crane
against the twilight skyline

FYI: This tanka is inspired by PBS's 14-minute documentary, City of Cranes, a film that "provides a unique perspective on urban construction by focusing on the lives and experiences of crane operators. The term can also metaphorically refer to cities with a high density of construction cranes, such as Toronto, which has frequently ranked highest in North America for its number of tower cranes."

Added: The construction industry, a major global employer, increasingly relies on migrant construction workers (MCWs) to mitigate labor shortages and enhance cost efficiency. Despite their vital role, MCWs face numerous challenges, including exploitation during recruitment, safety risks, health issues, and difficulties with social integration...excerpted from "Migrant Workers in the Construction Industry," Buildings, 15:5, 2025

My haiku below is written in response to one of these challenges faced by migrant workers:

fluorescent lights buzz ...
waiting for stamp after stamp

FYI: The Bill proposes approximately $3.7 trillion in tax cuts over a 10-year period. And Chris Lehmann remarked: the largest upward redistribution of wealth under any piece of legislation in American history.

And ABC News, June 3: Elon Musk attacks Trump's funding bill: 'Disgusting abomination'

This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination...the bill "will massively increase the already gigantic budget deficit to $2.5 trillion (!!!) and burden America citizens with crushingly unsustainable debt." He later posted that "Congress is making America bankrupt."

FYI: Maclean's, March 5: Goodbye to Gretzky

The cracks in Gretzky’s patriotism have been showing for years. In 2009, he was promoted to companion of the Order of Canada—the nation’s highest civilian honour—but he wouldn’t come home to accept it. “It’s just embarrassing,” Christopher McCreery, an expert on the Canadian honours system, said in 2018, after nearly a decade had passed and The Great One still claimed the honour.

One Year of Freedom

A Eurasian eagle-owl, born in captivity, had lived in a cage in one zoo or another for almost thirteen years. One year ago, he spotted a big hole, likely made by a vandal, in the cage. He flew away into the sky above the concrete jungle of New York. Hours later, he soared to fame with photos of his empty cage on the front page of every local newspaper. And he got a name, Flaco.

Flaco swooped and roosted in Central Park, taught himself how to hunt. Every move he made was under surveillance from a distance through thousands of dollars' worth of devices -- equipped with long lenses and night- and heat-vision goggles -- used by the birding enthusiasts. They posted Flaco updates on Facebook, Instagram and X (formerly Twitter), with the urgency of breaking-news reporters. I've been a Flaco fan since the first day he became free. When I read these updates, they produced an instant hit of dopamine, which energized me and helped overcome my writer's block.

Flaco lived briefly in a community garden, and later moved in more urban environs. One birdwatcher reported that Flaco stared at him on a power line when he opened windows to let in the night breeze; another posted a tweet on X, saying that Flaco hooted for hours on his rooftop. The most recent update on Facebook was a grey-haired non-birder face-to-face with Flaco at the window sill for a few cozy moments.

Abundance Tanka

new neighbor's sign
that reads B & B in bold
staked in long grasses
I wonder at this abundance
that other manicured lawns lack

FYI: CBC News, May 12, 2022: The case for leaving the perfectly manicured lawn behind: Why a more diverse and hands-off garden makes for a better environment

North Americans have had a longstanding love affair with crisp blades of grass and the perfectly manicured lawns we shape them into. The tidy turf tradition isn't homegrown though: the concept was hauled across the Atlantic by colonists who maintained lawns in Europe going back to the 17th or 18th century. The growth became a staple of the leisure class who revelled in lawn games like croquet and tennis and turned it into a status symbol, since bringing neatness to nature's chaos required deep pockets. And so, keeping up with the trim-turfed Joneses began.

Washington apple cut in half
with core rot

FYI: Washington is the top U.S. producer of apples; however, the apple tree is not native to the northeastern United States, where it was first declared “America’s fruit.” The apple traveled to North America the same way the Pilgrims did in the 1600s.

After 1918, people started associating apple pie with the "freedom and prosperity" they enjoyed as Americans. When the United States joined World War II, soldiers said they were entering the war for "Mom and apple pie."
