Thanksgiving Trip Home Haiku

Thanksgiving trip home
patches of twilight fog
on the horizon

FYI: The primary differences are the date, with Canadian Thanksgiving on the second Monday in October, because the earlier fall harvest and colder climate require celebrating the bounty of the land before winter sets in,  and American Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday in November, and the length of the holiday weekend (three days in Canada versus four-plus days in the U.S.).

And the following haiku could be read as a sequel to the above

Thanksgiving drive
after the bustle
quiet fields, deep shadows

Harriet S. Bates

And the following haiku could be read as a sequel to the above

a "No Politics" sign
on the dining room wall ...
Thanksgiving dinner

And the following haiku could be read as a sequel to the above:

Thanksgiving dinner
between mouthfuls and refills
this hushed silence

Winding Road Tanka

a winter fog
smothers the winding road
to her mother's house
the bruises on her face
say everything & nothing

Night Fog Tanka

night fog
clinging to bare trees
along the riverbank ...
a man half covered
by an army blanket

The Same Question Tanka

for the third time
this morning Father asks me
the same question ...
wisps of winter fog
shrouding our oak tree

Winter Fog Tanka

headlights
enveloped in winter fog
a one-armed man
wobbles back and forth
singing, Home sweet home

Selected Tanka: Border Town Tanka

the fog rolling
over the border town . . .
refugees
walk along train tracks
toward a blood moon

Selected Tanka: Talk of War Tanka

row after row
of brick houses blanketed
by winter fog ...
the howling of street dogs
punctuates our talk of war

Ship of My Past Tanka

alone ...
the ship of my past
sinking slowly
on this winter night
a lifeboat in patchy fog
