Another Day, Another Fight

a long walk home
after my first AA meeting
a neon sign
brings the flavour of beer
to the tip of my tongue

I repeat to myself
a day of sobriety
is wavelike ...
each one comes forward
with its own up and down

all I want
is to drink one beer (or two)
and pat my dog ...
alone at the crosswalk
a traffic light turns yellow

Added:

flowers wilting
in my front yard garden

a petal song for autumn

FYI: It might be interesting to do a comparison reading of the following tanka:

Between Reality and the Vision

Yom Teruah
this Jewish day of blasting ...
from Gaza
the faint boom, boom, boom
fueling the fire of revenge

a dream, and yet ...
dry bones in Gaza's graves
reshaped
into skeletons, filled out with flesh,
standing on their feet, alive

FYI: Yom Teruah, also known as Rosh Hashanah or the Feast of Trumpets, is a Jewish holiday marking the beginning of the Jewish New Year and the High Holy Days. Its name translates to "day of blasting" or "day of sounding the shofar" (ram's horn). The central element of Yom Teruah is the sounding of the shofar, which consists of 100 blasts during a traditional Rosh Hashanah service. The teruah sound itself can mean an alarm, a signal, or a shout of joy.

Thanksgiving Emails

reading between the lives and writing between the lines, LXXX

Subject: thanksgiving alone
To: my self [stuck in life]
From: me
Date: November 23
at daybreak flickering birdsong

Re.: thanksgiving alone
To: my drunken self
From: me
Date: November 24
alive in this broken world

FYI: This is the first set of English language tanka written in the form of an email. And L5's of two tanka allude to the thematic focus of the following poem:

“Invitation” by Mary Oliver

Oh do you have time
to linger
for just a little while
out of your busy

and very important day
for the goldfinches
that have gathered
in a field of thistles

for a musical battle,
to see who can sing
the highest note,
or the lowest,

or the most expressive of mirth,
or the most tender?
Their strong, blunt beaks
drink the air

as they strive
melodiously
not for your sake
and not for mine

and not for the sake of winning
but for sheer delight and gratitude –
believe us, they say,
it is a serious thing

just to be alive
on this fresh morning
in the broken world.
I beg of you,

do not walk by
without pausing
to attend to this
rather ridiculous performance.

It could mean something.
It could mean everything.
It could be what Rilke meant, when he wrote:
You must change your life.

FYI: Demonstration at what has become known as "Hostages Square," in Tel Aviv, near the Ministry of Defence, marked 50 days since Hamas attack on Israel...Hamas delayed the release of the second group of captives, accusing Israel of violating the truce, which started on Friday and is expected to last for four days... excerpted from Al Jazeera, Nov. 25: Tens of thousands rally in Tel Aviv amid delay in release of [second group] of captives.

FYI: Haaretz (founded in 1918, the longest running and most progressive newspaper with with an "exposure rate of 4.7%" in Israel), Nov. 28: Gaza's Unfolding Disaster: When Humanitarian Aid Is Your Last Meal... Orphans are multiplying in the streets, the bombing survivors are traumatized and once the truce ends, everybody knows death may fall again from the sky at any moment.

...a representative of Save the Children stated, “Every ten minutes, a child in Gaza is killed by a bomb and every five minutes, a child is wounded, in an asymmetric warfare situation that testifies to the failure of international law, whose aim is to protect civilian lives.”

And Reuters, Nov. 28WHO warns disease could be bigger killer than bombs in Gaza

WHO spokesperson Margaret Harris on Tuesday said the agency is already seeing a dangerous surge in diarrhea in Palestinian children.

“We saw a very high number of cases of diarrhea among infants and again, no, there’s no treatment available for them. You know, if you have a child with diarrhea you need to give them re-hydration in order to keep them going until they get better and if you’re not able to do that, they can die very quickly from dehydration.”

In Wine, There Is Truth

Breaking News! New national poll shows hypothetical Biden-Trump rematch in a tie. Like blowflies, these black, boldfaced words buzz around what's left of my sanity. I put away the newspaper.

Each night has enough trouble of its own.

dim barlight
alone with a bottle of gin
I count Trump charges

Happy Hour
I raise the last glass
to my reflection

Tomorrow will take care of itself. This is America.

FYI: The New Yorker, Nov 9: The Warnings About Trump in 2024 Are Getting Louder

This was the week, to mangle a phrase, when people finally freaked out about Donald Trump becoming President again. “Whichever individual poll you choose to believe or not,” Susan B. Glasser writes in her latest column from Washington, “the data point overwhelmingly to Biden sitting at near-historic lows in popularity and being essentially tied with Trump, a man who is running on an explicit platform of revenge, retribution, and Constitution-termination.

And CNN, Nov. 10: ‘That’s insane’: CNN panel on what Trump said he would do if re-elected

“CNN This Morning” panel discusses Donald Trump’s interview with Univision, in which the former president hinted he would weaponize the Department of Justice against political enemies if re-elected.

in my immigrant life

fleeting moments
between waking and dreaming
I muse

of twenty years younger

Heartbreak Tanka

alone again
with my drunken shadow
at the edge of night ...
my friend died from heartbreak
and I am still alive

Added: written in response to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Netflix Docuseries

before I went to the UK
most people didn't treat me
like a Black woman ...
a Jamaican turns off the TV
then gets stains off the diner floor

FYI: Yahoo! Entertainment, Dec. 8Meghan Markle on meeting Prince William and Kate Middleton: "The formality on the outside carried through on the inside."

"A friend of ours actually suggested that we document ourselves through this period of time," Harry explained. "With all of the misinformation that was going on out there, especially about us and the departure, it seemed like a really sensible idea."

Added Markle, "The past six years of my life, books are written about our story from people I don't know. Doesn't it make more sense to hear our story from us?"

And Rolling Stone, Dec. 8: Most Shocking ‘Harry & Meghan’ Revelations So Far, From Nazi Costumes to Hushed Racism

The Royal Palace Silenced Meghan and Harry When It Came to Racism

Before her relationship with Prince Harry went public, and months after they began dating, Markle says she wasn’t often treated like a Black woman. “It’s very different to be a minority, but not be treated as a minority right off the bat,” she explained. When press headlines and commentary made the Black element of her biracial identity the centerpiece of their grievances against her, the Prince added, the palace issued clear instructions to them both: “Don’t say anything.”

And The New Yorker, Dec. 15: Meghan and Harry’s Netflix Fairy Tale by  Rebecca Mead

...the newly released Netflix documentary series, Harry, the Duke of Sussex, uses a similar, if less pithily expressed, formula to characterize his own sense of having been squeezed by an unwelcome triangulation: that between himself, the Palace, and the press. Harry describes a summit with other senior members of the Royal Family that was held, early in 2020, at Sandringham, one of the Queen’s country homes, to discuss what, if any, future role he and his wife, Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, might play within the institution of the monarchy. “It was terrifying to have my brother scream and shout at me, and my father say things that simply weren’t true,” Harry said. “I think, from their perspective, they had to believe that it was more about us, and maybe the issues that we had, as opposed to their partner, the media, and themselves in that relationship that was causing so much pain for us.”

Royals exist to be seen. No longer regarded as divinely authorized, and for centuries deprived—thank goodness—of meaningful legal power, the monarchy has only one real function: visibility. To be a working royal is to show up and be looked at, whether it’s attending the openings of hospital wings or factories, or arriving at galas and state ceremonies...
