An Immigrant Poet's Reflection on Writing the Suffering of Others

"Merely to say, to see and say, things
as they are,” grows loud ... and louder in a corner of my mind as moonlight slants through the study window.

[decades-long
inhuman occupation compressed]
to one-day attacks
reponding with the red glow
of missiles in Gaza's night sky

this endless loop:
October 7, October 7 ...
[and yet
the decades BEFORE
and the day AFTER] bloodshedding

each bombed-out house:
an album with no photos
but with people
living, wounded and dead
pressed between its pages

anything new
under Gaza's smeared sun?
smoky rubble
beyond smoky rubble, and yet
again smoky rubble

I etch each pain with a borrowed tongue, then every word becomes a betrayal; but all the silence will turn into a heart wound. Turning my gaze from writing, then looking out the window at the moon, its fullness, I mutter, "what is the use of useless poetry when it cannot stop the killing?"

The Question Not Asked Yet

for Albert Camus

charred remains
of a woman and baby
the sky, tinged with red

Is it barbaric to write poetry during the genocide? But what else remains? A gray-haired poet mutters to himself in the flickering candlelight.

He turns his gaze away from a piece of wrinkled paper, then stares out his cracked window at smoky ruins after smoky ruins ...

Use of Poetry Tanka

For Seamus Heaney, Ireland's most renowned poet since Yeats, playwright and translator who received the 1995 Nobel Prize in Literature, who claimed:

In a war situation or where violence and injustice are prevalent, poetry is called upon to be something more than a thing of beauty.

in daily life?

Gazan Poet Tanka

Against the Drowning Noise of Other Words, XXV: "poetry"

Palestinian health officials say at least 16 children have died in recent days from starvation and dehydration as Israel’s assault continues. UNICEF warns the number of child deaths will likely “rapidly increase” unless the war ends.

And BBC News, March 5: Gaza aid airdrop: Why delivering food from the air is controversial

"Airdrops are expensive, haphazard and usually lead to the wrong people getting the aid," Jan Egeland, the secretary general of the Norwegian Refugee Council and a former UN aid chief, told the BBC after returning from a recent three-day visit to Gaza.

Airdrops are seven times more expensive compared to ground-delivered aid due to costs related to aircraft, fuel and personnel, says the WFP.

In addition to that, only relatively small quantities can be delivered with each flight, in comparison to what a convoy of lorries can bring in, and significant ground co-ordination is required within the delivery zone, says the WFP.

The Guardian, March 8: Five killed and 10 injured in Gaza aid airdrop when parachute fails to open: Package ‘fell down like a rocket’ on roof of house near al-Shati refugee camp where people were waiting, a witness says

And Haaretz, March 9: UNRWA Accuses Israel of Forcing Agency Staff to Falsely Admit Hamas Links

A report by the UN agency details allegations of severe physical beatings, waterboarding, and threats of harm to family members.

FYI: Democracy Now, March 7: Ceasefire Talks Falter as Famine Plagues Gaza, Aid Remains Blocked by Israel

The group Refugees International is warning Israel’s persistent blocking of humanitarian aid into Gaza has created “apocalyptic” conditions inside the besieged territory. At least 20 Gazans have starved to death; the youngest victim was just one day old.

a soup kitchen volunteer in Rafah, Mohammed Al-Dalu: “Our hearts are being squeezed when a child comes over and says, 'I want to have rice and chicken.' We are unable to provide rice, let alone chicken, in light of the war that we are experiencing. This is not only a war on civilians. It is a war on food, on starvation. People here in the Gaza Strip cannot find bread to eat.”

Independence

"Dear Chen-ou, I hope this email finds you well. Share with you my family photo, which was taken this glorious morning."

In the photo, my friend, his wife and two daughters, wrapping themselves in the flags of blue and yellow, stand with arms linked before a row of rusty Russian tanks on Liberation Square.

My friend used to be a Surrealist poet, known for his purposeful use of "obscure and unwieldy verbiage." He sent me the following poem at the end of his lengthy and furious email a week after the Russian invasion.

in smoky twilight
the head of I cut off
the roof of M falling through --
I paint poetry with screams,
the last phase of lyricism

His emails now are short and straight to the point, and often attached with photos to speak for his mood or state of mind, like the one he sent me today. Under his family photo, there is a caption that reads:

If Russia stops fighting, there will be no more war.
If Ukraine stops fighting, there will be no more us.

of ravens scratching
at the soldiers' hearts

Selected Haibun: Hard Labor

Sunlight slants through the window in bars of gold, collecting in a pool around my feet. Shrouded in her own darkness, my muse moans and screams. At her side, I keep yelling, "Push baby, push..." The final few words have clung to the walls of her womb for hours.
